Oboist
Paula was born in Havana, Cuba. She graduated in 2023 from the University of Arts (ISA), in two specialties: Musical Composition, with Professor Juan Piñera, and Oboe with Professor Lauren Ríos. She has also attended to a Hochschule fur Katholische Kirchemusik und Musikpadagogik Regensburg’s sacred music course developed in Havana.
Paula currently works as an assistant professor at the University of Arts (ISA) in the subjects of Orchestration, as part of the Composition Chair, and the subject Extended Techniques and Contemporary Music, as part of the Oboe Chair. She also has a permanent position as 2nd oboe of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso.
She has presented her compositions on the isa - International Summer Academy by the University of Music and Performing Arts of Vienna in the 2022 and 2023 editions; participated as an oboist in the Darmstädter Ferienkurse 2023 and recieved composition masterclasses at Impuls 8th Festival for Contemporary Music. Paula has also presented her works in the “Cuba 2023” collaboration project between the University of Arts (ISA) and the German orchestra TonWerk; in the Contemporary Music Festival of Havana 2021, and in three editions of the Sacred Music Festival (2019, 2021 and 2022), among others.
Paula has had academic experiences in courses and masterclasses of musical composition with Professor Girolamo Deraco (Italy), Detlev Müller-Siemens (Germany), Mark Andre (France), Franck Bedrossian (France), Nadir Vassena (Switzerland), Klaus Lang (Austria), Steven Heelein (Germany), Diana Pérez (Spain), and Ileana Pérez (Cuba).
As an oboist, she has received classes from Professor Carlos Rosas (Mexico), Peter Veale (New Zeland), Marie-Luise Modersohn (Germany), Caludia Gerauer (Germany), Pilar Fontalba (España), Kevin Tiboche (Panamá) and José Luis Urquieta (Chile). She has explored other instruments like baroque oboe and recorder.
Paula has participated and received prizes in the following contests: UNEAC 2023 Harold Gramatges Composition Competition, International Summer Academy 2022, Musicalia Competition held by the University of Arts (ISA) (2022 & 2021 editions), and UNEAC 2021 Harold Gramatges Composition Competition.
Parallel to music, Paula is passionate about photography. She has taken several courses at the Havana School of Creative Photography (EFCH). In the months of December 2018 and January 2019, her first personal exhibition entitled “re[VISIONES]” took place at the House of Poetry sponsored by the Cultural Management Center of the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana. This important experience was the starting point for her participation in many other exhibitions.
